Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Suppressor turbine seems to wear out, is that normal?

The turbine is the component that endures most of the gunshot heat and flame, with burning gunpowder acting like sandblasting on its surface. The shorter the barrel, the more intense this effect becomes. While Silent Steel suppressors have no barrel length restrictions, shorter barrels will cause the turbine to wear out faster. The flame erosion is more a visual problem and it doesn’t affect on suppressor performance. The turbine is very thick (7mm) and can sustain a lot. Fortunately, the turbine can be easily replaced using the maintenance tools. See the Spare parts

Early 2024 the turbine material was changed to four times stronger heat resistant stainless steel to ensure long life cycle with short barrels (10″-14″). We also have a turbine (special order) for 5.56 barrels under 10″ where the flame erosion is even higher.

Is the new QD Lock Mount compatible with old Silent Steel QD muzzle devices?

There are some compatibility exceptions.

QD Lock mount is not compatible with Silent Steel Saiga M24x1,5 QD flash hiders and muzzle brakes. The QD Lock mount will not fit on the thick barrel thread part.

The QD Lock Mount does not lock properly on older 5.56 and 7.62 muzzle brakes with 1/2″x28 (MB556-1228) and 5/8″x24 (MB762-5824) threads. In these models, a slight difference in the o-ring groove position causes the locking ball bearings to lock in the wrong place. Although the QD Lock Mount can still be used with these muzzle brakes, the locking strength is not as intended. However, it is fully compatible with other muzzle brakes, flash hiders, and new 1/2″x28 and 5/8″x24 muzzle brakes.

For optimal and strongest locking, it is recommended to use QDL muzzle devices with QD Lock mount. More info coming soon.

My barrel thread is very close to hand guard. How much space the new QDL needs behing the thread?

The QDL locking nut aligns precisely with the back of the flash hider when using the standard length muzzle device. The back of the suppressor is in line with the shoulder of the barrel thread.

We have also made some extra long A1 flash hiders (1/2″x28 & 5/8″x24) for the rifles which would have very small gap between the hand guard and suppressor.

Third options is a short A1 flash hider. The flash hider will go inside the suppressor. The barrel nut will be 13mm behind the barrel thread shoulder. Available in 1/2″x28 and M14x1LH.

Short, standard and extra long A1 5.56 1/2″x28 flash hiders.

Can a user update a QD suppressor mounting to a QD Lock mount?

Unfortunately, no. The mounting parts are permanently attached (stamped) to the suppressor body and cannot be disassembled without causing damage. See the picture with stamping marks on the tube.

What is the purpose of the screws that come with the QD muzzle brake?

The screws are used for fine adjustment of horizontal barrel movement. For right-handed shooters, the compensation ports on the right side of the muzzle brake should be open to help keep the rifle better on target. For left-handed shooters, the ports on the left side of the muzzle brake should be open.

Does the QD muzzle device thread need a protection cap?

No. The muzzle devices are made from carbon steel and those are nitrided. The threads are very strong and you cannot really break them in normal or abnormal use.

Can I use crush washers to install muzzle device?

NO!!!! Crush washers do not crush evenly and crush washer are the most common reason for baffle strikes and bad accuracy with suppressor. A1 flash hider and 5-prong flash hiders do not need indexing. A2 flash hider and Muzzle brake are delivered with shim kit. Use the shims to index the muzzle device to correct position.

Do I need thread locker for muzzle device?

In order to ensure that the muzzle device stays tightly on the barrel, we recommend using a thread locker. Blue Loctite, Rockset, or something similar would be suitable for this purpose. It is recommended to torque the muzzle device to a value between 20-50 Nm. This will help to keep the muzzle device securely in place during use.

Can I use ultrasonic cleaner to clean suppressor?

Sound suppressors also suppress ultrasonic sound waves. The body of the suppressor weakens these waves, and the ultrasonic effect is weakest where it is needed most, inside the suppressor. We recommend disassembling the suppressor and using the ultrasonic cleaner only for the stainless steel Flow Suppression Module. This allows the ultrasonic sound waves to directly access fouled parts. Additionally, ensure the cerakoted front cap is not submerged in the liquid to prevent damage to the cerakote.

It is also important to note that the ultrasonic cleaner should not be used to clean aluminum parts or the cerakoted body, as it will damage these surfaces.

How to clean the suppressor body tube inside?

We recommend soaking the tube in Schletek Evolution or similar suppressor cleaning chemical (if it smells bad, it should be good) for two hours, then manually removing the carbon residues with a brush. For efficient cleaning, use either a 40mm grenade launcher tube brass brush or a 45mm bottle brush.

How do I know is my suppressor Gen 2 or Gen 3?

One way to determine if your suppressor is Gen 2 or Gen 3 is to check for a marking at the muzzle of the suppressor. If it is a Gen 3 suppressor, it should have a Gen 3 engraving. Additionally, a Gen 3 suppressor has an easily recognizable internal flash hider at the muzzle of the suppressor. See the picture of Gen 3 front cap below. Gen 3 is only available in caliber 5.56.

Can I upgrade my suppressor to Gen 3?

Both Gen 1 and Gen 2 suppressors can be updated to the latest version. Gen 3 Flow Suppression Modules can be purchased separately. This will allow you to upgrade your suppressor to the most up-to-date technology.

My suppressor is totally blocked and I cannot clean it so that the flow-through would work.

The stainless steel filter can be changed by a gunsmith. The filter mesh roll and tube can be purchased separately. See the spare parts page Spare parts

Can I use suppressor with aluminum body in my AR15?

Aluminum suppressors can be used with AR10/15 rifles, but they cannot withstand the heat of continuous or full auto fire. In our tests, the aluminum Compact Flow Streamer body was destroyed after four magazines (30 rounds) of 223 ammunition. Aluminum bodies are recommended for 9mm carbines and bolt action rifles.

This is how you destroy aluminum suppressor:
